Discovering Todo Village
Exploring new places and traditional settlements is a delightful experience for travelers. Located in East Nusa Tenggara province, Todo Village, or ‘Kampung Todo,’ is nestled within Manggarai Regency, specifically in the West Satar Mese district. Renowned as the origin of the Manggarai Kingdom, Todo Village offers both historical significance and natural beauty, making it a unique and captivating destination.

A Glimpse of Traditional Life
Todo Village is situated 44 kilometers east of Labuan Bajo and provides a fascinating glimpse into the West Manggarai way of life. The village is home to the Tado tribe, one of the few tribes in West Manggarai still closely knit and structured. The tribe, headed by a ‘Tua Golo’ (tribe master), has over 3,000 members spread across 13 villages. While journeying from Labuan Bajo to Todo Village, travelers can enjoy breathtaking views of hills, lush forests, and the unique spider web rice fields known as ‘lingko.’
Unique Attractions in Todo Village
Todo Village is a traditional settlement bereft of modern facilities but brimming with stunning features such as rocky fences, grassy lands, and picturesque scenery. The village’s crown jewel is the traditional houses called ‘Niang Wowang,’ conical structures covered with rattans. Visitors may also come across small drums and ancient cannons scattered throughout the village. These elements make Todo Village an ideal destination for those looking to immerse themselves in local culture.
Tourists can engage in various activities in Todo Village. The traditional houses, ‘Niang Todo,’ are a must-see and provide excellent photo opportunities. With permission from the locals, visitors can even enter these houses. Building rapport with the villagers might lead to an invitation for dinner, an experience that allows travelers to enjoy local cuisine and heartfelt conversations.
Vibrant Cultural Performances
Todo Village is also known for its vibrant cultural performances, such as ‘Caci,’ a traditional martial art. This performance is not held daily, so it is advisable to check the schedule beforehand, possibly with the help of a local guide. ‘Caci’ events are grand gatherings where descendants of Todo’s kings and other villagers come together, making it a lively and attractive spectacle.
Another significant ritual is ‘Wajo Mora,’ a sacred event that sees many villagers come together. This ritual is deeply rooted in the culture, and its abandonment is believed to bring misfortune. Witnessing these cultural events provides visitors with a deeper understanding of the village’s rich traditions.
How to Reach Todo Village
The prime checkpoint for reaching Todo Village is Kupang City, the capital of East Nusa Tenggara province. From Kupang, travelers need to head to Manggarai Regency, a journey of about 28 hours covering 795 kilometers. Upon reaching Manggarai, the next destination is West Satar Mese district, and finally, Todo Village. The route is straightforward, and hiring a tour guide is optional.
With its blend of historical significance, cultural richness, and natural beauty, Todo Village in East Nusa Tenggara province is a must-visit destination for any traveler. Don’t you agree?
